Jo Berry

Primarily dealing with the authenticity of the image in the digital age, Jo builds new layers into the process of representation. Editing and re-photographing found photographic images usually containing an element of unreality - such as fancy dress costume packaging, 3-D bookmarks, advertising images and packaged scale models, her resulting paintings take on new unsettling meanings and truths.

Jo Berry was born in Halstead, Essex in 1970. She studied Fine Art (Painting) at Manchester Metropolitan University 1989-1992 and now lives and works in Cardiff.

She is currently exhibiting as part of the John Moores Painting Prize at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool and at the National Eisteddfod of Wales, Carmarthenshire.

Recent exhibitions include Wales Artist of the Year Exhibition 2013 where she received the Highly Commended Award and ‘Hot One Hundred’ at the Schwartz Gallery, London E9, 2013. Other group shows include ‘Last Days of the Empire’ 2010, g39 Cardiff and ‘If You Build it They Will Come’ 2008 g39 Cardiff, ‘Through Tomorrows Eyes’ International Painting Competition in Swansea, 2012 and the Surface Gallery Open, Nottingham 2008. She has had works selected for the National Eisteddfod of Wales on three occaisions.
Recent work has been looking at images from stock photography websites. Deliberately selecting images from the bottom end of the ‘popular’ category, this vast debris of unwanted imagery seem unable to persuade anyone to do anything. They have maybe reached the end of their lives in one sense, but by resurrecting elements of them using a painstaking painterly treatment they take on new meanings.
